QUEENS D.A. BROWN TO INSTALL BEARAK TO 5th TERM AS NEQJCC PRES., OCT. 29; NYC BOARD OF ED PRESIDENT CAROL GRESSER TO KEYNOTE; AWARDS TO KAPLAN & BILITZKY

Corey B. Bearak of Bellerose, an attorney with experience in state and city government, will be installed to a fifth term as President of the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council [NEQJCC] on Sunday morning, October 29, 1995. The "Installation Breakfast" and awards reception, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. at Marathon Jewish Community Center, 245-37 60th Avenue [west of Marathon Parkway] in Douglaston, features a Keynote Address by NYC Board of Education President Carol Gresser, Installation of Officers by Queens County District Attorney Richard A. Brown and awards to former NEQJCC President Meir Bilitzky, spiritual leader of the Young Israel of New Hyde Park, and Rabbi Robert Kaplan, Director of Intergroup Affairs and Community Concerns for the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New York {JCRC}.

In addition to Mr. Bearak (Temple Sholom), District Attorney Brown will install Joseph M. Varon (Young Israel of New Hyde Park) as First Vice President, Susan Fogel (Young Israel of Windsor Park as Second Vice President, Helene Zaro (Bell Park Jewish Center) as Third Vice President, Marcia Federman (Jewish Center of Bayside Hills) as Recording Secretary and Anne Kirsch (Haddassah) as Treasurer. Mr. Varon chairs the Installation Committee which includes Helene Zaro, Milton Prane and Max Singer, Michael Katz and Steven Goodman, the new Executive Vice President of the Samuel Field/Bay Terrace Y. Mr. Bearak, who serves as Counsel/ Chief of Staff to City Councilman Sheldon S. Leffler, also serves the borough's Queens Jewish Community Council as Vice President. A co-founder of Community Advocates for Public Education {CAPE}, he served on Community School Board 26 from 1989 to June, 1993 and on Community Board 13 from 1980 to 1988. In addition, Mr. Bearak is President of the North Bellerose Civic Association, Vice President of the Eastern Queens Civic Council, public affairs co-chair of the Queens Federation of Civic Councils, steering committee member of QUEST [Queens United to Explore Secession Tomorrow], President of the Queens County Line Democratic Association and a National Board member of the National Jewish Democratic Council [NJDC] and Democratic Action Chair of NJDC's New York State Chapter. He also serves as co-chair of the Northern Queens Health Coalition.. He previously served as a Vice President and Brotherhood (Men's Club) President of Temple Sholom, a congregation based in Floral Park.

Rabbi Kaplan will be presented the NEQJCC's award for Outstanding Public Service by his boss, Michael Miller, Executive Director of JCRC. Rabbi Kaplan has helped local JCCs throughout the metropolitan area and has been instrumental in facilitating neighborhood development and coalition building efforts, especially in Queens.

Rabbi Bilitzky will be presented the NEQJCC's award for Outstanding Community Service by Bernard Kimberg, former Executive Vice President of the Samuel Field/ Bay Terrace YM&YWHA. Rabbi Bilitzky was instrumental in organizing the Council, the formation of its Lay Leadership and Rabbis Councils, and its Neighborhood Development Campaign.

An association of religious, education, fraternal and community organizations, the NEQJCC covers Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, Hollis Hills, Little Neck, New Hyde Park, Oakland Gardens and Queens Village (north).

Council projects include neighborhood development, fostering intergroup understanding and building a multi-cultural coalition. The Council combats anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination. The NEQJCC also sponsors forums with major public figures, Jewish Cultural events, open discussions with local Rabbis and represents community concerns.

A UJA/Federation beneficiary, the NEQJCC works closely with the Queens Jewish Community Council, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New York, the Metropolitan New York Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty and the Samuel Field/ Bay Terrace YM-YWHA.
